A major controversy has erupted after Girdhari Lal Sahu, husband of Uttarakhand Women and Child Welfare Minister Rekha Arya, made derogatory comments about women from Bihar during a public event in Almora. In a viral video, Sahu is heard suggesting that if someone struggles to find a bride, they could bring a girl from Bihar for marriage at ₹20,000–₹25,000, a remark widely condemned as demeaning and offensive.

The Bihar State Women Commission has decided to serve a notice to Sahu, demanding an explanation and a public apology.
Opposition parties, including the Congress and RJD, criticised the remarks, calling them an insult to women’s dignity, especially troubling as Sahu’s wife holds the Women and Child Welfare portfolio.
