Uttarakhand Minister’s Husband Sparks Controversy Over ‘Bihar Girls’ Remark

Raga News Zone | National Desk

A major controversy has erupted after Girdhari Lal Sahu, husband of Uttarakhand Women and Child Welfare Minister Rekha Arya, made derogatory comments about women from Bihar during a public event in Almora. In a viral video, Sahu is heard suggesting that if someone struggles to find a bride, they could bring a girl from Bihar for marriage at ₹20,000–₹25,000, a remark widely condemned as demeaning and offensive.

The statement has triggered immediate backlash:

  • The Bihar State Women Commission has decided to serve a notice to Sahu, demanding an explanation and a public apology.

  • Opposition parties, including the Congress and RJD, criticised the remarks, calling them an insult to women’s dignity, especially troubling as Sahu’s wife holds the Women and Child Welfare portfolio.

Facing the growing uproar, Sahu released a clarification and apology, claiming his comments were taken out of context and insisting he meant no disrespect. He expressed regret if his words hurt anyone’s sentiments.

The incident has sparked a wider debate on gender sensitivity, respect for women, and the responsibilities of public figures and their families. Many say remarks that assign a monetary “value” to women reinforce harmful stereotypes and undermine efforts toward equality.
