‘I Don’t Appease, I Am Truly Secular’: Mamata Banerjee
Raga News Zone | Politics Desk
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has firmly rejected allegations of practising appeasement politics, stating that her governance is based on true secularism and equal respect for all communities. Addressing a public programme in Kolkata, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said she does not appease anyone and works for people across religions and backgrounds.
“I don’t appease. I am secular in the true sense,” Mamata Banerjee said, responding to repeated criticism from opposition parties, particularly the BJP. She added that attending religious and cultural events of different communities should not be misunderstood as appeasement, but seen as part of India’s inclusive and pluralistic tradition.
The Chief Minister pointed out that she participates in programmes related to all faiths, including Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, and others. According to her, critics selectively highlight certain events to create a false political narrative. She stressed that her government’s policies focus on development, welfare, and social harmony, not vote-bank politics.
Mamata Banerjee also reiterated her commitment to protecting Bengal’s cultural diversity and maintaining communal peace. She said secularism means respecting every religion equally and ensuring that no community feels excluded or targeted.
Her remarks come at a time when political debate over secularism and appeasement has intensified ahead of upcoming elections. The statement has sparked fresh political reactions, with the TMC defending her stand and the opposition continuing to question her approach.
