Anthem Protocol Row Escalates As Tamil Nadu Governor Skips Scheduled Address
Raga News Zone | Chennai
A controversy broke out in Tamil Nadu after Governor R.N. Ravi skipped a scheduled speech at an official programme, asserting that the National Anthem must be respected without compromise. The move has triggered sharp political reactions and added to the ongoing tensions between the Raj Bhavan and the state government.
According to officials, the Governor was expected to deliver an address at the event but chose not to proceed after raising objections over the handling of the National Anthem. Sources close to Raj Bhavan said the Governor believed proper protocol related to the anthem was not being followed, prompting his decision to stay away from the speech.
The development drew immediate criticism from the ruling party and its allies, who accused the Governor of politicising a formal government function. They alleged that established norms were adhered to and claimed the Governor’s action was part of a continuing pattern of confrontations with the elected government.
Raj Bhavan, however, defended the Governor’s stand, stating that respect for national symbols is a constitutional responsibility. Officials maintained that the decision was taken purely on principle and not driven by political considerations.
This incident is the latest in a series of flashpoints between the Tamil Nadu government and the Governor, with previous disagreements over legislative approvals, public remarks, and administrative matters. Political analysts say such repeated standoffs have highlighted growing friction in Centre–state relations.
As the issue continues to spark debate, opposition parties and constitutional experts are weighing in, turning the spotlight once again on the role of Governors and the importance of protocol in official state functions.
