U.S.–Venezuela Crisis: UN Security Council to Hold Emergency Meeting as Trump Issues Warning to Interim Leadership

Tensions between the United States and Venezuela continue to escalate, with the United Nations Security Council set to convene an emergency session on January 5 to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in Caracas.

The development comes after Venezuela’s interim leadership announced new political moves following the removal of former president Nicolás Maduro. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez on Sunday formed a special commission aimed at securing the release of Mr. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Rodríguez also chaired her first cabinet meeting since U.S. forces carried out an operation that led to Maduro’s removal from power. The move marked a significant shift in Venezuela’s political landscape and triggered strong reactions from Washington.

Shortly after Rodríguez assumed the interim role, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning, stating that Venezuela’s new leadership could face consequences exceeding those imposed on Maduro if it fails to cooperate with U.S. authorities. Trump reiterated that Washington now holds decisive influence over developments in Venezuela, while also signaling engagement with the interim administration in Caracas.

Meanwhile, Maduro is expected to appear before a federal court in New York on Monday, where he will be formally informed of the charges filed against him by U.S. prosecutors.

On the ground in Venezuela, the human cost of the confrontation remains unclear. No official casualty figures have been released so far. However, Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López claimed that a significant portion of Maduro’s security detail was killed during the U.S. operation, along with members of the armed forces and civilians. He described the deaths as having occurred under violent circumstances, following the American strike.

As diplomatic pressure mounts and global attention intensifies, the upcoming UN Security Council meeting is expected to focus on regional stability, humanitarian concerns, and the legal implications of recent events in Venezuela.
