In a tragic incident that has sparked nationwide outrage, 24-year-old Angel Chakma, an MBA student from Tripura’s Unakoti district, died on December 26, 2025, following a brutal racially motivated attack in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The young student had been critically injured during the assault on December 9.
Angel and his younger brother were reportedly targeted at a roadside canteen in Selaqui area by a group of six men who hurled racial slurs, mocking their Northeast Indian identity. When Angel protested, asserting “We are not Chinese… We are Indians”, the confrontation turned violent. He sustained severe injuries to his head, neck, and spine, ultimately succumbing to them after weeks of treatment in hospital.
Authorities have arrested five suspects, including two juveniles. A sixth accused, reportedly in Nepal, remains at large, with a reward of ₹25,000 announced for information leading to his capture. Police teams have been sent to Nepal to assist in tracking him down.
The incident has prompted strong reactions from political leaders. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha contacted Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who assured strict action and said “no one will be spared.” Leaders from northeastern states have also condemned the attack, demanding swift justice.
Civil society and student organizations, including the Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI), have called for a fast-tracked investigation and stricter laws to prevent racially motivated violence. Candlelight marches and protests have taken place in Tripura and other regions, highlighting the need for safety and equality for citizens from the Northeast.
Angel Chakma’s family described him as a bright and peace-loving young man. His father, a BSF constable, has demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators.
