Team India Clarifies Ayush Badoni’s Controversial ODI Selection for New Zealand Series
Raga News Zone | Sports
Team India has addressed the controversy surrounding the selection of Ayush Badoni in the ODI squad for the ongoing series against New Zealand, following widespread discussion among fans and cricket experts.
Badoni earned his maiden call-up after all-rounder Washington Sundar was ruled out due to a rib injury sustained in the first ODI of the three-match series. The BCCI confirmed Sundar’s withdrawal and announced Badoni as his replacement for the remaining ODIs in Rajkot and Indore.
Team Management Explains the Decision
India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak explained that Badoni’s inclusion was part of a strategic decision to maintain the team’s bowling balance. “After losing a key all-rounder like Sundar, we needed someone who could contribute both with bat and ball. Ayush provides that flexibility,” Kotak said.
Kotak also highlighted Badoni’s strong performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and for India A, which convinced selectors that he was ready for the international stage. “We believe in giving young talent opportunities when the team’s composition requires it,” he added.
Mixed Reactions
Despite the official explanation, Badoni’s selection has faced criticism from former players and fans alike. Some former cricketers argued that more experienced players could have been considered instead, while others praised the team management for supporting young talent. Social media platforms have been active with debates over the fairness of the selection.
Looking Ahead
India currently leads the series and will face New Zealand in the second ODI in Rajkot. If selected in the playing XI, Badoni will have the chance to make his international debut and justify the confidence shown by the team management.
