Supreme Court Pauses Bail of Kuldeep Sengar in Unnao Rape Case
Raga News Zone | National Desk
The Supreme Court of India has put a temporary halt on the bail granted to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the former BJP MLA convicted in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The apex court stayed the Delhi High Court order that had suspended his life sentence and allowed him bail, ensuring that Sengar will remain in jail for now.
The Supreme Court acted on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which challenged the High Court’s decision. The CBI argued that the case involves serious legal and public interest concerns and that releasing the convict could undermine justice. The top court has issued notice to Sengar and sought his response while the matter is under consideration.
Kuldeep Sengar was convicted in 2019 for kidnapping and raping a minor girl and sentenced to life imprisonment. The case had shocked the nation, especially after the survivor’s father died in custody and the family faced repeated threats. The survivor has consistently fought a long legal battle seeking justice.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had granted Sengar bail citing the long period he had already spent in prison. However, the order faced strong opposition from the survivor, activists, and investigating agencies, leading to the Supreme Court’s intervention.
With the Supreme Court’s stay in place, Sengar will continue to remain behind bars. The development has been welcomed by the survivor and rights groups, who see it as an important step toward ensuring justice in one of the country’s most high-profile criminal cases.
