Air India New York-Bound Flight Grounded After Engine Damaged at Delhi Airport
Raga News Zone | New Delhi
An Air India flight operating from Delhi to New York was grounded after one of its engines was damaged when it sucked in a baggage container during ground movement at Indira Gandhi International Airport. The incident occurred while the aircraft was taxiing, leading to the cancellation of the onward journey.
According to officials, the wide-body aircraft sustained damage to its engine after a baggage container, which was reportedly on the taxiway during ground-handling operations, came in contact with the running engine. Visuals from the airport showed the container lodged near the engine, prompting immediate safety checks.
All passengers and crew on board were reported safe, and there were no injuries. The aircraft was moved to a parking bay, and engineering teams were deployed to assess the extent of the damage. As a precautionary measure, the flight was cancelled, and passengers were provided with alternative travel arrangements, accommodation, or refunds as per airline policy.
Aviation authorities have taken note of the incident, and an inquiry is expected to review ground-handling procedures and safety protocols, especially under low-visibility conditions. The focus of the investigation will be to determine how the baggage container ended up on the taxiway and whether standard operating procedures were followed.
Air India stated that passenger safety remains its top priority and assured cooperation with authorities during the investigation. The incident may lead to temporary operational adjustments as the aircraft undergoes detailed inspection and repairs.
