Maharashtra’s Lonar Lake Sees 20-Foot Water Rise, Rare Crater Lake Draws Attention

Raga News Zone | Maharashtra

Water levels in Lonar Lake, the famous meteorite-impact crater lake in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, have risen by nearly 20 feet, triggering concern and curiosity among locals, scientists, and authorities.

Officials said the sudden rise in water level is primarily attributed to continuous rainfall in the region and increased inflow from surrounding areas. Lonar Lake, formed around 50,000 years ago by a meteorite impact, is a unique geological site and one of the few saline and alkaline lakes in the world.

Residents living near the lake reported noticeable changes in the shoreline over the past few days, with water encroaching closer to nearby pathways and structures. Local authorities have begun monitoring the situation to ensure that there is no threat to nearby habitations or historical structures around the crater.

Experts noted that fluctuations in Lonar Lake’s water level have been observed in the past, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. However, a rise of nearly 20 feet is considered significant and has prompted calls for scientific assessment to understand its long-term impact on the lake’s fragile ecosystem.

Environmentalists have also raised concerns about the lake’s health, pointing out that pollution, sewage inflow, and human activity have already affected its unique biodiversity. They have urged authorities to use the current situation as an opportunity to strengthen conservation measures.

District officials said the situation is under control and is being closely observed. Further studies may be conducted to assess whether the rise in water level could affect the crater’s stability or nearby areas.

Lonar Lake continues to be a site of global scientific interest, and the latest development has once again brought focus on the need to protect and preserve this rare natural wonder.
