An Indian-origin married couple has been arrested in the United States for allegedly operating a sex and drug trafficking network from a motel in Virginia, according to federal authorities. The case has drawn attention due to the scale of the alleged operation and the serious charges involved.

The accused, Kosha Sharma (52) and Tarun Sharma (55), popularly known by the nicknames “Mama K” and “Pop,” were taken into custody following a joint operation by the FBI and local law enforcement agencies in Dumfries, Virginia. The couple owned and managed the Red Carpet Inn motel, which investigators say was used as a hub for illegal activities.

Motel Allegedly Used as Front

According to court documents, the Sharmas allegedly allowed prostitution and drug distribution to take place from specific rooms on the third floor of the motel, while regular guests stayed on other floors. Authorities claim the couple knowingly permitted these activities and took a share of the profits generated.

Investigators allege that the motel functioned as a controlled environment where sex work and narcotics sales were facilitated, with the owners providing protection and advance warnings in case of police presence.

Months-Long Investigation

The arrests followed a months-long undercover investigation carried out between May and December 2025. During this period, law enforcement officers reportedly posed as customers, drug buyers, and individuals linked to prostitution networks to gather evidence.

Officials claim multiple controlled drug purchases were conducted during the probe, leading to the seizure of substances including fentanyl and cocaine. Several alleged prostitution encounters were also documented as part of the investigation.

Others Also Arrested

Along with the Sharmas, three other individuals were arrested in connection with the case. Authorities allege that these individuals assisted in managing drug distribution and prostitution activities at the motel.

Serious Federal Charges

All accused have been charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, among other offenses. Under U.S. federal law, charges involving fentanyl carry severe penalties, including mandatory minimum prison sentences if convicted.

Federal prosecutors stated that the case highlights how criminal networks exploit vulnerable individuals and misuse commercial properties to run illegal operations.

Legal Process Ahead

The accused are expected to face further court proceedings in federal court. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional charges or arrests are possible as the case develops.

Law enforcement agencies reiterated their commitment to dismantling trafficking networks and urged communities to report suspicious activities linked to hotels and motels.
