Himachal Seafarer Detained Abroad Ahead of Wedding, Family Seeks Help

A merchant navy officer from Himachal Pradesh has been detained after a Russian-linked oil tanker he was serving on was intercepted by foreign authorities, leaving his family anxious just weeks before his scheduled wedding.
The officer, a resident of Kangra district, was part of the crew aboard the tanker when it was stopped during a routine enforcement operation in international waters. Authorities are reportedly investigating the vessel over regulatory and sanction-related issues, following which several crew members, including the Indian officer, were detained for questioning.
Family members said the officer had joined the merchant navy recently and was on his first major overseas assignment. His wedding is planned for next month, and preparations were already underway when news of the detention reached home. Since then, the family claims communication has been limited, adding to their concern.
The family has appealed to the Indian government and the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and ensure the officer’s safe and early return. Local leaders have also extended support, urging authorities to take up the matter diplomatically.
Officials have indicated that the situation is being monitored and that efforts are underway to provide consular assistance to Indian nationals involved. No charges have been formally announced so far, and the investigation is said to be ongoing.
The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by Indian seafarers working on international vessels amid complex global regulations.
